Comments by R.N. De Armond: "These pictures seem to have been taken by a member of a party of goldseekers bound up the Yukon River, probably for Dawson and probably in the summer of 1898. It is surmised that they owned or traveled on the steamboat JENNIE M., since she is the vessel most often shown in the pictures. They wintered at some point along the river."

The Alaska Historical Society was reconstituted in 1967 as a result of renewed interest in Alaskan history resulting from the Alaska Purchase Centennial. The society is governed by a board of directors, and has a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. The society holds annual meetings, sponsors seminars, and publishes a newsletter "Alaska History News" (first issued in 1968), and a journal "Alaska History" (first issued in 1984).
